January's Featured Member

ACI Manitoba is proud to present Casimiro Nhussi and NAfro Dance Productions as January’s Featured Member. Casimiro Nhussi established NAfro Dance Productions in Winnipeg February 2002 as a non-profit organization. However, the core group of artists and administrators has been working together since 1999.

Beginning as a dancer, Casimiro became artistic director of the Mozambique Dance Company in 1992. In 1994, Casimiro trained with Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre in New York City before moving to Canada.

Casimiro has created seven evening length works for the company including:

  • Symbiosis (1999)
  • Around the Fire (2000)
  • Seduction of Hope (2001)
  • If My Tears could Paint a Picture (2002)
  • Adaptions of our Species (2003)
  • Let Me Dance Before I’m Gone (2004)
  • Adaptions of our Species (2004)
  • Patana (2005)

Over the past seven years, NAfro has created a steady foundation in Winnipeg and maintained a loyal and divers audience. With seven successful seasons promoting their unique style and quality performances, NAfro Dance Company is the first choice for the ACI Manitoba’s Featured Member of the month.

NAfro’s Mandate

NAfro sets itself apart by bringing dance into the community, by interacting with each of its audiences uniquely and, most importantly, by developing and presenting the artistic vision of founder Casimiro Nhussi. NAfro is a multi-disciplinary dance and music production company based on African-Modern dance designed to reflect the contemporary, multicultural and global society of today!
