Film Training Manitoba - September Featured Member

FTM is dedicated to providing high caliber training and professional development programs to sustain Manitoba’s Film Industry, which is part of Manitoba’s vibrant cultural community. It is imperative that Manitoba be capable of providing crew and services that meet world industry standards. FTM works closely with the industry to identify the training needs within the community. With this information FTM offers practical, skill-based training that is targeted where labour gaps occur. We deliver practical workshops that provide entry-level and advanced skill development for Manitoba crewmembers.

FTM offers the required courses for membership to IATSE local 856 and the DGC Manitoba District Council. In September of 2008 we began offering these courses online, providing access to training for people living in rural areas of Manitoba. FTM also collaborates with sponsors and industry partners to put together workshops and presentations that provide our local crewmembers with advanced training and professional development. Instructors travel from as far away as Los Angeles to train Manitobans in various aspects of filmmaking.

FTM also partners with local production companies to offer work experience opportunities. We work closely with IATSE 856 and DGC Manitoba to assess candidates applying to our work experience training programs and determine the level of training needed. All work experience opportunities occur within active film work environments such as film sets, production offices or related facilities.

Our Aboriginal Program Coordinator works with industry representatives and Aboriginal communities to provide career awareness and career counseling, and to coordinate the Aboriginal Crew Development Program.

FTM also recognizes the value of working with established institutions to lay the foundation for the future by partnering with post-secondary institutions. FTM has recently partnered with Red Rover College to deliver the new Intro to Film Crew course through their Continuing Education department. Red River will offer this course again as part of its spring calendar.

Finally, FTM offers monthly information sessions throughout the year. Participants who are new to the industry learn about Manitoba’s film industry, our training programs, and career opportunities.
