Festival and Event Management Masterclass with Paul Gudgin

A two day program designed to inspire and inform anyone involved in the business of festival and event management. It includes sessions on marketing, press, programming, evaluation, sponsorship and fundraising.

Instructor: Paul Gudgin, former Director of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Paul Gudgin has over 20 years experience in the management of festivals and events and was for 8 years the Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This was during an exciting period that saw the event double in scale hosting 12,000 performances and selling over 8 million tickets. Paul is the Visiting Professor of Festivals and Events at Leeds Metropolitan University. This course provides a unique opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading festival and event management professionals.

DAY ONE

Course Introduction
An introduction to the aims and objectives of the course

Festivals and Great Festival Destinations
Understanding why some festival towns and cities work better than others and assessing how to make the
most of your own festival environment

People and Partnerships
This session looks at how effective festival organisations manage themselves, their relationships with
stakeholders and collaborations with partners.

Programming
The key to the success of any festival is the strength of the program.This session explores a number of
programming approaches.

Sponsorship and Fundraising
Successful sponsorship and fundraising is a challenge for any festival. This session considers how to
approach sponsors, finding ways of generating commercial income and running effective membership schemes.

Festivals, Tourism and Destination Branding
Festivals are increasingly viewed as an effective means of destination marketing and attracting
visitors.This session considers how this can best be achieved and how festivals can work most effectively with the tourism sector.

DAY TWO

Festival Marketing
This session examines a number of successful marketing approaches adopted by leading festivals.

Venues and Festival Infrastructure
A vital component of any festival, this session considers how to make the most of the venues available to
your festival and what infrastructure is required to run festivals successfully.

Working with the Press
Every festival needs to receive plenty of press coverage and this session looks at how best to achieve
this aim.

Festivals - Impacts and Evaluation
It is becoming ever more important for festivals to demonstrate the contribution they make to their host
town or city. This session considers how festivals should look at measuring and maximising their impact economically, socially and culturally. It also considers approaches to evaluating your event.
