Graphic Design is a rich applied art which uses verbal and visual communications to produce commercial art. Graphic Design is often considered a "media" industry.

Graphic: A visual representation of an idea or message.

A Graphic Designer conceptualizes and produces Graphic Art and visual material to communicate information.

Graphic Design is a collaborative art form and Designers work closely with illustrators and photographers.

Graphic Designers choose images (i.e. signs, symbols, language) combined with colour and arrange these elements on a surface to convey the idea to an audience. Since Graphic Design is a multi disciplinary art, designers must have skills in design theory and be knowledgeable with a variety of multimedia, image processing software and audio-visual technology.

There is an extremely high demand for Graphic Designers in Manitoba and over 1000 currently employed in over 125 companies with a starting wage at $20,000 and averaging $34,000.

Educational Needs:

A Graphic Design Diploma from a collage or a university degree in Visual Arts.

Some Designers increase their employment opportunities and develop business and marketing skills.

Many High Schools in Manitoba offer programs in Visual Arts and Communications.
