Manager, Communications (Bilingual)

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, Communications & External Relations, the Manager, Communications leads and develops communication initiatives and activities in support of the goals and objectives of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. This position takes a lead in the production of communication products and planning of communication activities and events for the museum, and plays a key role with respect to media relations. This position also takes the lead in managing the Museum’s strategic communications process (i.e. issues management).
Leadership

Supervises staff in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Coordinate with Human Resources for appropriate staffing levels. Conduct interviews, make employee selection and assist in developing the schedule for orientation planning.

Coach and provide career development advice to staff. Supervise and manage the staff’s overall performance.

Responsible for staff scheduling including employee training, employee vacations, overtime approval, etc.

Establish employee goals and conduct employee performance reviews. Includes approval of merit increases, salary adjustments upon promotion, authority to exercise discipline, etc.
Communications planning, development and management

Prepares written communication and manages final approval process to ensure consistent museum messaging and presentation. Includes article submissions, correspondence, website content, speeches and talking points, new releases, backgrounders, advisories, media lines, letters to the editors, Op-Eds, feature stories, pamphlets, brochures, fact sheets, web and social media content, video storylines, newsletters, exhibits, multimedia products, and outreach programming and materials.

Ensures the consistency of quality, branding and messaging in all museum-produced communication materials.

Conducts research in preparation of producing communications. Research may include interviews, media coverage, policy documents, information archives, files, computer databases, public options goals, and website content.

Conducts research in relation to the strategic management of issues and identifying proactive opportunities.

Provides public environment analysis on a timely basis and identifies pertinent communication issues and trends to Museum officials.

Writes contract specifications and requests-for-proposals / requests-for-information for various communication products, based on analysis of client requirements, project objectives, and information needs of target audiences. Provides guidance to consultants and contractors on project specifications and deadlines.

Reviews, edits and produces complex policy, program and communication documents for CMHR leadership and staff. May be asked to adapt material for tone, clarity and style to match the level of understanding of target audiences, including media, stakeholders (internal and external).

Prepares media coverage analysis reports on issues of interest to the CMHR and identifies emerging trends.

Coordinates news conferences, media briefings, interviews with Museum leadership.

Provide on-going strategic media counsel and support to the museum leadership.

Prepare staff (and other museum representatives as necessary) in the field for media interviews, speaking engagements, etc., as appropriate.

Develop and implement proactive strategic communications strategy and report against objectives.

Accountable for the implementation of CMHR Strategic Communication guidelines and processes.

Responsible for identifying and developing Communication policies and guidelines as appropriate.

Monitors and evaluates communication activities, projects and programs.

Represents the Museum (events, presentations, speeches).

Responds to media requests in an accurate and timely manner and acts as a Museum spokesperson (following Museum policy), taking appropriate action to correct inaccuracies or misinformation when necessary.
Qualifications
Skills and Knowledge – Required
-
Education at the post-secondary level in a related field (e.g., a university degree in journalism, communications, or public relations) and 5+ years’ experience in at least one area of communications (e.g., public relations, internal communications, writing and editing, communications planning, media relations, respondent relations), or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience with print and/or electronic, broadcast, and social media.

Experience in managing a communications unit and in developing strategic communication initiatives.

Ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written.

The ability to present facts in language and style that is appropriate to the target audience.

Professional writing and editing skills; the ability to inform others, increase awareness, persuade or change behavior.

Proficient in MS Word.
Skills and Knowledge – Desired

Experience in a related organization, e.g., museums, arts & culture, Crown Corporation; and/or knowledge of the arts and culture industry.

Experience in human rights, social justice, or law.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

Work is in an office environment. May require long periods at a desk, reading lengthy documents, and time in front of a computer.
