Our Mandate:
To collect, preserve and promote historical and contemporary crafts within the cultural mosaic of Manitoba
Facts about MCML that might surprise you!
-
We have over 9,000 hand crafted artifacts in our museum collection, ranging from 1,000 year old spindle whorls from Central America to contemporary glass by Ione Thorkelsson.
-
We feature three unique exhibits in the museum every year – some with historical pieces, others with contemporary work by local craftspeople, and some with a mix of both.
-
We are holding our second juried show in June 2011. Taking Flight will honour Bente Cunnings who left us a significant bequest in 2007. The deadline to apply is April 6, 2011.
-
We offer informal drop in sessions regularly. Sharing Craft evenings are every second month at McNally Robinson, and our Crafternoon drop-in sessions are held at the museum on the last Saturday of every month.
-
We have workshops on Carding, Printing on Fabric, Needlefelting, Laundering your Textiles, and Knitting in the Round this winter/spring.
-
Our library holds 3,500 titles - many unique in Canada - plus journals, patterns, and a vertical file. Anyone can use the books on-site. To borrow you have to be a member.
-
Our membership is only $30 for the year, and the benefits include borrowing privileges in the library, 10% off all workshop fees and a quarterly newsletter.
-
We have a small gift shop.
-
We have about 30-40 volunteers who contribute over 1,500 volunteer hours annually. If you are interested in volunteering please contact us.
-
You can follow us virtually on our website at www.mts.net/~mcml or on Facebook, or you view our on-line exhibit Hands On! at www.virtualmuseum.ca.
-
We plan on holding our second Craft on the Loose exhibit at an outdoor venue during the summer of 2011. We will keep you posted about application criteria.
-
