Portage and District Arts Centre presents Carmen Hathaway's Self-Similarity Gallery Event and Artist Talk

October 29, 2011

Self-Similarity Gallery Event & Artist Talk

Multimedia artist Carmen Hathaway will screen her innovative, original art video at the launch of her solo exhibition Self-Similarity. Set in the Portage & District Arts Centre's 1,700 square foot gallery -- this intense, powerful exhibition consists of two and three-dimensional pieces in fused art glass, acrylic painting, digital stills and video, with iterated design elements bridging all works. The video serves as art component and bond, linking the parts of the whole in an explosive continuum of color, form and design. In Self-Similarity, the artist explores the phenomena of repetition of patterns -- iteration in varying scale and form. Myriad connections and transitions of our experience -- spiraling ellipses of earthbound structures and galaxies beyond, fractal geometry and more are integral components in the exhibition. Also in the gallery, is Ms. Hathaway's video documenting the process of creation of this new body of work.

Member of the Abenaki First Nation of Odanak, Quebec, Ms. Hathaway has resided in Manitoba since the mid-70's. Her visual arts career has evolved through exhibition, commissions, operating her retail gallery, and teaching. The recipient of several Manitoba Arts Council grants -- she was recently awarded a Community Connections and Access grant in support of her 2011 exhibitions. Her images have been purchased for cover art, and featured in a variety of publications. Carmen has exhibited in Canada & US. In 2010, she was commissioned by VANOC to create 2 original art prints for exhibition at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympics’ Winter Games Venues’ Aboriginal Arts Program. On May 6, 2011, she attended the opening of her solo exhibition, Carte Blanche, at the Abenaki Museum (Musée des Abénakis), Odanak First Nation, Quebec. This 25-year retrospective -- 1986 - 2011 -- is on display until October 31.
