A rich program of chamber music, with arias featuring renowned soprano Maria Luz Alvarez, a cappella choral pieces and works for choir and strings - a wide range of repertoire by the early music "greats" such as Victoria, Fabrieli, Byrd and Jasquin des Prez, to works for choir and string quartet by Manitoba composers Andrew Balfour and Ken Nichols.
The concert is based on the theme of pilgrimage – to shrines, within oneself, artistic or across centuries. Conductor Ross Brownlee and early music specialist Douglas Kirk have selected songs of mystery from medieval Spain, glorious large works by Handel, Gombert and Gabrieli, and strong introspective works for string quartet and choir by Manitobans Ken Nichols and Andrew Balfour. Throughout there is variety of performance – solos, duets, choir alone, strings alone and full on double choir and strings.
From the Middle Ages to Manitoba is a partnership between Camerata Nova and Virtuosi Concerts. It will be held in the exceptional acoustic of University of Winnipeg’s newly restored Convocation Hall, and hosted by the President's Office, with Dr. Axworthy bringing personal greetings from the University on Sunday afternoon.
“On behalf of The University of Winnipeg, I can attest to the great value we place upon being the home of Virtuosi Concerts. I look forward to attending this year's President's Concert and encourage others to do the same. We look forward to housing this longstanding series for years to come, for to quote Gabrielle Roy, ‘Could we ever know each other in theslightest without the arts?’” – Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg.
A concert preview can be viewed on the Camerata Nova website www.cameratanova.com beginning the week of May 9. The preview will include portions of an interview with Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg.
