'Resonating with the complexity and fury of love' (Uptown Magazine) Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers' season ends with 97 Positions of the Heart (based on our 2011 Fringe Festival hit BASH ON REGARDLESS).
This 'extraordinary, heart-stopping fusion of movement and text' (Winnipeg Free Press) exposes the life of the Canadian author of the groundbreaking 1945 poetic novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept. Staring down the punishing expectations for women in the middle of the last century Elizabeth Smart side-stepped convention to demand a place in the adventure. This bohemian unwed mother of four devoured life unbridled and without apology.
Elizabeth Smart lived out a passion-fuelled existence as evidenced in her 1945 literary achievement By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. 97 Positions of the Heart is a lyrical travelogue through the awakening inner world of this much loved Canadian writer. WCD's performance marries poetry, music and movement in a celebration of Smart’s intensely driven quest for self-actualization. Her rapturous life story unfolds against the backdrop of a bewildering childhood, a tumultuous romantic pairing with English writer, George Barker, motherhood and her pursuit of a literary language that dares to speak truth from the social margins. Born into a prominent Ottawa family, she shirked an over-controlling mother, social convention and a burgeoning Canadian class system that sought to domesticate her. In the end, Elizabeth would leave behind her voice, without apology.
