Don Amero, Inez Jasper, Cris Derksen, Jason Burnstick and Tracy Bone are some of the notable artists who have made the trip to Manitoba’s Interlake Region for the week-long Aboriginal Music Performers Camp (AMP Camp) since its beginning in 2006. The project, a partnership between Manitoba Music and the Canada Council for the Arts, fills a gap in the national music scene, providing an opportunity for Aboriginal artists to share their experiences and develop the kind of relationships that support touring and product development.
“I wanted to experience something new musically, and I wanted to focus only on music with no distractions,” says Jason Burnstick. “AMP Camp was more than that; though, and — apart from gaining new friends — I got to learn from the lap slide player that I’ve wanted to meet for over 10 years now.”
A typical day at AMP Camp takes the participants through 12 hours of discussions about business practices, songwriting and song structure, record=production decisions, communication and band leadership and performance skills.
