Folklorama is excited to be hosting its first ever youth conference, Lead By Example, on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Canad Inns Destination Centre Fort Garry. The day long event is designed to provide youth ages 14 to 25 with the opportunity to discover the significant role in which volunteerism and leadership can play in cultivating success. In addition to attending four career-building conference sessions led by experienced professionals, attendees will also have the exclusive opportunity of meeting singer/songwriter Sierra Noble and Hot 103 radio host Ace Burpee. These inspiring local leaders will share first-hand how volunteerism and leadership have played a role in their own personal success.

“Folklorama is very fortunate to have an extensive network of young men and women who volunteer their time to us in various capacities throughout the year, both during and outside of our two week multicultural festival,” says Debra Zoerb, Folklorama Executive Director. “We greatly value the contributions of these dedicated young people and recognize the immense potential that exists in today’s youth to lead our community towards a bright and innovative tomorrow. We are thrilled to be providing an opportunity for further growth and development through the introduction of our Lead By Example youth conference.”

Conference hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with doors opening for registration at 8:30 am. The four professional building sessions include Volunteering and Benefits to Employment; Leadership Skills; Best Practices for Scholarships; and Résumé Writing, Cover Letters and Interviews. The cost to attend the conference is only $20 per person and includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and conference materials. Participants will also be treated to closing entertainment by local artists Walking Wolf Singers and Dancers, who will showcase their Aboriginal culture through a captivating show that includes hoop dancers, jingle dancers, friendship dancers, drummers and chanters .

Interested youth must register in advance by 5:00 pm on Friday, January 20, 2012. To register today or for further details about the conference, individuals can visit folklorama.ca/youthconference2012 or contact Festival Services Director Sheri Jack at 982-6218 or jacks@folklorama.ca.
